baby talk and other things

week 12, day 7

You can see Tabitha really trying to learn to talk, it's so lovely to watch. When you are talking or singing to her she very carefully watches your lips move, and occasionally she will move her mouth too soundlessly trying to copy you.
She's also learning to use her voice more and more, when she was born, there was only two sounds she made. Crying....and in fact, different kinds of crying. Now there are gurgles and giggles and coo-ing. She's learned that she doesn't need to cry to get our attention any more, now she can make this upset noise, the baby equivalent to "Mum! deal with this!" and when she wakes up suddenly then she makes the cutest squeaks. I'm trying to encourage this by making simple sounds at her and seeing if she'll copy, she tries really hard with "ahhhhh" but when I try to teach her "ooohhhh" she must think I look hilarious because she just laughs at me.

We're still doing baby sign with her even with her valiant attempts at talking, because by the time she is 9 months old she should start being able to pick it up herself. When I'm reading her bedtime story that has animals I try to do the signs for all the animals, and trying to remember to ask her if she's hungry...so far the one problem I'm finding with doing it is that I often only have one free hand, because the other arm is busy holding her.

We are suffering through a horribly hot summer, normally I would love the sunshine and go and lounge outside in a swimming costume, but Tabitha is hating being too hot, it's making her really grumpy and is now living just in Nappies because having her in even the thinnest tops or baby grows is just too hot. I tried to put her in a cool bath in our living room so she could sit and splash and cool down, but the water was too cold, and then we discovered she has nearly outgrown her baby bath! she's just growing so quickly!

Another way she's growing quickly is in what she is interested in, we have her play mat which to begin with she wasn't much interested in it or being on it, but as her visual field has grown and her ability to entertain herself has got better, she has started to love it, or more specifically she loves lying on it kicking it to make the things above her move, and making faces at herself in the mirror.

She also really enjoys being in bath with me or going to the swimming pool, she wiggles her arms and legs madly while giggling at me. Though the swimming pool is occasionally a bit noisy and distracting for her, she takes a while to get used to it.

My confidence in breast feeding in public is slowly going up and up, especially since a friend came over to talk to me while I was feeding her, and they just asked if she was sleeping, then got embarrassed when I told them she was having a snack. I think most people do just presume that baby is sleeping or your having a cuddle because if you lift your top up and are sitting down they people really can't see anything (though I am still worried someone will make a nasty comment).

Tabitha has now had two sets of jabs, and has been so very brave for both of them! She barely cried! and it only took 60 seconds of cuddling to make her feel better. She is such a good girl. and I'm trying to force myself to be calm and upbeat to her when we're heading into the GP's surgery and when she's getting them done so that my upset doesn't worry her even more.

I also have the sneaking suspicion that she is starting to teethe, she is getting more dribbly and is biting on her hand, clothes and me a lot more, and I thought I felt a sharp edge on one of her gums...but we'll have to see. it could be nothing.

Lastly, I am still loving being a mum! I can endless obsess with how amazing Tabitha is and how much I love her.
