week 30, day 4
My hips are now starting to hurt a lot of the time, sometimes I'll move awkwardly and something will feel like it's twisted up inside my joint and pretty much any movement results in agony, instead I just need to attempt to slowly re-position myself until I can get my legs straight. The rest of the time my hips just ache a lot, when I'm walking, or lying too long on one side in bed, or sitting in a position my hips decide the don't like...it's really not very nice. But I was pretty much just ignoring it, presuming it was a fairly normal part of pregnancy, until I asked one of my friends about it, and she said it could be SPD (SPD wiki link) which is basically a thing that can happen in pregnancy where your hip ligaments and muscles relax too far, which means that then everything in the joint starts to rub on bits that it shouldn't. It should be fine as soon as pregnancy is over, it reverses itself...most of the time it does anyway. The problem can be that if your not careful with your hip joints, especially while giving birth, you can actually cause permanent damage to yourself. So I officially need to stop ignoring this and actually talk to the midwife about it next time that I see her, and hopefully she can give some advice. Though one of the recommendations for it is to avoid an epidural (because you are numb from the waist down and need to be in stirrups they can pull your hips out of joint by accident and do lots of damage) but I don't want an epidural anyway, and giving birth in water (because it means you can get into a more comfortable position easier and it's less weight on your hips.) and I really want a water birth. So, all in all, it could be worse.
I have finally started swimming again. My goodness it's a lot harder when you're pregnant! I'm a fairly good swimmer, not amazing, but average/above average. I learned to swim when I was little and used to go swimming allot. At the beginning of last year I was swimming about a mile a week. Now I can barely do half that! just moving through the water feels a lot slower and a lot more effort! I'm also having to be careful of my hips, because while you are actually in the water, it doesn't hurt at all, but once your out of the water it does sort of catch up with you. I also asked while I was there about taking baby swimming and they basically said I could go swimming with baby basically as soon as the health visitor says that it's OK, which *crosses fingers* should be fairly early. AND my lovely friend Myra (not her real name) is willing to come swimming with me and baby which should make it easier as our local swimming pool doesn't have family changing rooms so Coyote can't help me get baby changed.
A friend took me to a baby cafe that she helps run, which was pretty interesting. It's basically a support group for breastfeeding, which means I didn't get as much out of it as I would do when baby arrives, but it was still interesting, and now I know where it is and how to get there on the bus! Though I'm still hoping that everything just goes right and I'll be able to breast feed with ease...who knows, it might happen.
I still can't believe that I've got to 30 weeks, it really is getting close for baby getting here! at the baby cafe there was a woman who'd had her baby at 33 weeks. It's hard to think that that could be me. It's all happening so fast now.
